  • The Federal Reserve today announced the end of its quantitative easing programme, which has been in place since 2008. Designed to boost liquidity in a time of economic peril, the Fed's so-called current asset purchases programme will conclude this month. 
  • The total amount of assets held by the Fed spiked in November 2008.

  • Over the course of QE1, QE2 and QE3 the Federal Reserve's balance sheet has grown from around $925 billion on September 10th 2008 to $4.48 trillion on October 22nd this year. 
  • The Fed's balance sheet passed the $1 trillion mark by late September 2008 and hasn't looked back since.
