New: HBO to launch OTT service

  • HBO will launch an OTT service in the United States next year; making its programmes available without a pay TV bundle in the country for the first time.
  • HBO Go streaming offering currently only available to traditional pay TV subscribers; company says it wants to 'pursue consumers outside the multi-channel universe'.
  • Decision to launch standalone service follows success of Netflix in pushing unbundled OTT offering without contract.
  • Announcement coincides with HBO parent company Time Warner's future growth pitch to investors.
