4. Colonel appointed Burkina Faso President

  • Burkina Faso's army has appointed Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida as interim president. 
  • Zida will serve as 'transitional leader' according to the army; he was part of the presidential guard.
  • Announcement was made in statement issued after talks between 'military factions' who were vying for power (Reuters). 
  • Another army officer, General Honore Traore, had previously claimed to have taken over the presidency following ousting of long-time leader Blaise Compaore.
