Xi and Abe meet in Beijing

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping has met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for 25 minutes in Beijing. 
  • First meeting between the two men since they both took office; last talks between leaders of Japan and China was in 2011. 
  • Abe told a press conference after the meeting it was 'the first step' in improving relations. 
  • Leaders discussed the disputed Senkaku Islands and possibility of creating a crisis management mechanism to avoid incidents that could lead to escalation of conflict (Japan Times).
