Comet drilling may begin today

  • The Philae lander will attempt to drill into the surface of Comet 67P today, with the ESA increasingly concerned the lander will run out of battery.
  • Philae is solar powered but is getting significantly less sunlight than planned after bouncing on landing and ending up in the shadow of a cliff.
  • ESA scientists considering how they might move the lander out of the shadows.
  • Operation is especially delicate as the lander may not be fully attached to the comet's surface.
