Comet lander begins drilling

  • Philae comet lander has begun drilling into surface of Comet 67P.
  • ESA scientists hoping that drilling might free lander and allow it to move out of cliff shadow; currently only getting 1.5 hours sunlight a day.
  • Lander is currently low on battery; ESA hoping lander can move position and gather more data before it runs out of battery.
  • Next contact with lander expected to be on Friday night.
