Regulator to probe Premier League TV rights

  • UK media regulator Ofcom is to launch an investigation into how the Premier League sells its lucrative TV rights.

  • Announcement of an investigation follows a complaint by Liberty Global's Virgin Media.

  • Virgin argued that more Premier League matches should be made available for live broadcast and that this would reduce the prices paid by consumers.

  • Premier League had been expected to hold auction for rights from the 2016/17 season early next year; Sky and BT currently pay over £3bn for UK live TV rights.
