Economic Essentials: Irish unemployment down

  • Irish unemployment fell in the 3rd quarter to a seasonally adjusted rate of 11.1 per cent from 11.5 per cent at the end of Q2. 
  • Irish labour force declined; 2.17m people in the labour force in Q3 - down 0.4 per cent on Q3 2013. 
  • U.S jobless claims increased last week with initial claims rising 21,000 from the previous week to 313,000; four week moving average adjusted to 294,000 - up 6,250. 
  • A €315 billion investment fund has been announced by the European Commission; designed to fill what the EC says is an investment gap in the European Union.
