European Parliament votes to break up Google

  • EP votes 384 to 175 in favour of unbundling search engines; 56 MEP's abstained from the vote. 

  • European Parliament has no power to force Google to split into seperate companies.

  • European Commission, which is investigating Google over anti-trust issues, holds regulatory power.

  • EP press release said MEP's 'stressed the need to prevent online companies from abusing dominant positions by enforcing EU competition rules and unbundling search engines from other commercial services'.
