Burkina Faso promised democratic transition

  • Issac Zida, the Colonel appointed by army leaders to be President of Burkina Faso, has promised he will hand over power to a transitional body.
  • There had been criticism of army using people's revolution against long serving leader Blaise Compaore to instigate a coup.
  • Zida told journalists that he would follow constitutional framework that calls for transitional body to be put in charge of executive powers until an election can be held.
  • Zida: 'We are not here to usurp power and to sit in place and run the country but to help the country come out of this situation' (Reuters).
