Russia and Turkey in gas tie up as 'South Stream' is ditched

  • Russian energy firm Gazprom is to look into building a gas pipeline from Russia to Turkey.
  • Gazprom originally planned to build the so-called 'South Stream' pipeline through Bulgaria.
  • EU objected to the plan on competition grounds; President Putin blamed the EU for 'South Stream' plans being abandoned.
  • European Commission ordered Bulgaria to stop work on the pipeline in June 2014 as it investigated the country for non compliance with EU legal framework and competition norms.
