Canadian General Election: Liberal Party sweeps to power

Justin Trudeau, aged 43, to be new PM

  • The Liberal Party secured a remarkable result, jumping from 36 seats in 2011 to 184 seats and a majority on Monday night.

  • Stephen Harper, the outgoing PM, was unable to secure a 4th consecutive term and will stand down as the Conservative leader.

  • Mr. Trudeau, whose father was also prime minister, told supporters the result 'showed what positive politics can do'.
