New York Times: AT&T helped the NSA spy on American's communications

  • Newly released documents revealed by Edward Snowden and seen by the New York Times and Pro-Publica show that the American communication giant's relationship with the NSA was 'highly collaborative' and that AT&T showed an 'extreme willingness to help' in giving the NSA access to billions of emails from its network.

  • The report also claims that the leaked documents show that AT&T provided 'technical assistance' to help NSA install wiretaps on all internet communications at UN HQ in New York.

Senate blocked from extending U.S surveillance powers

  • Libertarian Republican Rand Paul blocks the Senate from passing legislation to prevent key provisions of the Patriot Act from expiring at midnight on Sunday,

  • While new legislation in the form of the USA Freedom Act will likely pass later this week, it will see telephone companies store phone records rather than government agencies.

The three key Patriot Act provisions that expired on Sunday night

  1. Section 215 - NSA collection of American's telephone metadata in bulk.

  2. Section 6001: Allows surveillance of so-called 'lone wolf' terror suspects.

  3. Section 206: Allowed 'roving' surveillance, whereby the FISC court can order surveillance on a target rather than the individual's device.

Rand Paul says he will block Senate attempts to renew Patriot Act measures

So tomorrow, I will force the expiration of the NSA illegal spy program.I am ready and willing to start the debate on how we fight terrorism without giving up our liberty.
— Rand Paul to Politico
  • Libertarian Republican Senator tells Politico that he will block the Senate from passing an extension of the Patriot Act or a tweaked version known as the USA Freedom Act.

  • By delaying passage of legislation, Mr. Paul would ensure that the Patriot Act expires on Sunday night.

  • On Saturday, President Obama called on the Senate to pass the USA Freedom Act, which would limit the NSA's ability to collect bulk metadata.
