Rwandan intelligence chief arrested in London over war crimes

  • Karenzi Karake, aged 54, was arrested at Heathrow airport on Saturday and is due in court later on Tuesday.

  • The Metropolitan Police said they detained Mr. Karake because of a European arrest warrant issued against him by Spanish authorities relating to his alleged involvement in the death of civilians in the years following the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

  • The intelligence chief was one of forty officials indicted by a Spanish court on charges of mass murder and crimes against humanity in February 2008 - at the time Rwanda called on foreign governments to ignore the 'bogus' arrest warrants issued by Spain.
