Report: Gambian people living in a 'state of fear'

  • A report published by Human Rights Watch on Thursday examining the humanitarian conditions in the country under President Yahya Jammeh since 1994 found that the government has committed serious violations against broad sectors of society, including minorities, political opposition, human rights activists and student leaders.

  • The report says that the apparatuses of the state have been used to create a sense of fear 'upheld by campaigns of intimidation, arrests, detention, disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings'.
